The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) is launching a registry (The Birth Registry) for the episode of care for labor and delivery. This registry will collect clinical discrete data directly from the EHR, and allow participants to see their quality metrics, benchmarked against other sites. Risk adjustment and site demographics will provide an “apples to apples” basis for benchmarking.

The data dictionary was created with collaboration from SMFM, AWHONN, ACMN and SOAP. Using clinical data instead of administrative data will allow for much more granular metrics.

As the framework of medical care shifts to a value-based system, demonstrating quality will be key to success. As a provider-led organization, ACOG wants to be setting the definitions of quality care, based on data. The Birth Registry is a fundamental step in that direction, and will allow participants to understand, improve, and demonstrate the quality of the care they provide.
